A Brief History of the Ford Ranger

The Ranger was reintroduced to the American market in 2019 after being only available internationally for several years. The 2024 Ranger is all new, making it the sixth generation of the midsize truck. The Ford Ranger has a rich history that spans several decades. Here's a brief overview of the Ford Ranger's history:

First Generation (1983-1992)

The Ford Ranger was introduced in North America in 1983 as a compact pickup designed to be a smaller, more fuel-efficient alternative to full-size trucks. The first-generation Ranger featured a range of engines, including four-cylinder and V-6 options.

Second Generation (1993-1997)

In 1993, the Ford Ranger underwent a significant redesign, transitioning into its second generation. The new model showcased a more rounded and aerodynamic body styling. It offered improved interior comfort and various engine options, including a powerful 4.0L V-6 engine.

Third Generation (1998-2012)

The third-generation Ford Ranger arrived in 1998 with a modern and aggressive design, featuring larger dimensions and improved handling. Ford introduced the "Edge" and "FX4" off-road variants, catering to customers with specific needs for off-road capability. The Ranger continued to evolve, receiving updates to its engine lineup and technology features throughout its third generation.

Fourth Generation (2012-2019)

In 2011, Ford announced that it would discontinue the Ranger in North America. However, the Ranger continued to be produced and sold in international markets, such as Australia and Europe. The fourth-generation Ranger featured a modern, refined design incorporating advanced technology and improved fuel efficiency.

Fifth Generation (2019-2023)

In response to increasing demand for midsize trucks, Ford reintroduced the Ranger to the North American market in 2019 with an all-new design. The fifth-generation Ranger combines the ruggedness and versatility of its predecessors with modern features and advanced technology. It offers a range of trims, including the XL, XLT, and Lariat, catering to various customer preferences and needs.

Current Generation (2024+)

All new for 2024, the Ford Ranger has a complete redesign emphasizing ruggedness and power. Introducing several new engine options and a suite of technology and driver aids that bring the Ranger into the future.

What's New for the 2024 Ford Ranger

Throughout its history, the Ford Ranger has proven to be a reliable and capable truck, offering a balance of utility, off-road capability, and everyday practicality. It has gained a loyal following of enthusiasts and is a popular choice in the midsize truck segment. The Ranger has always been a truck willing to adapt and change to suit the consumer's needs, and the 2024 Ranger is no different.

Ford returned to the drawing board and designed the 2024 Ranger with you in mind. Starting with styling, the new Ranger takes cues from its bigger sibling; the front end of the midsize truck is redesigned to more closely resemble the F-150

In addition to the front-end facelift, the Ranger has changed its design further to emphasize its offroad prowess. The new Ranger has improved its fully boxed frame to offer more stability in navigating rough terrain. The wheelbase and track have been increased by about 2 inches, increasing the truck's stability and adding bed space.

The 2024 Ranger comes standard with the proven 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, but you can get it in a 2.7L EcoBoost V-6 flavor shared with the F-150 and Bronco. All levels of the Ranger are available as two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The Ranger has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds, making it a reliable choice for towing small trailers or recreational equipment.

Bumping up the technology was a big goal for the 2024 Ranger, and it does not disappoint. The Ranger has class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist, an integrated trailer brake controller, and a 360-degree camera to make off-roading and trailer backing easier available. Also available are wireless charging, a large 12-inch center touch screen, and up to 31 driver assist features.

2024 Ford Ranger Trim Levels

The 2024 Ford Ranger is available in several trims. To help you better understand which one is right for you, I'll be breaking them down and going over the details that separate them.

XL Trim

With an MSRP of $32,565, the XL trim serves as the base model of the Ford Ranger, providing a solid foundation of capability at an accessible price point. It has a standard 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, delivering a balance of power and efficiency.

XLT Trim

Stepping up to the XLT trim level, you'll find a well-rounded package that combines comfort, capability and a touch of refinement. Priced slightly higher than the XL trim with an MSRP of $36,005, the XLT offers additional features and customization options. The 2024 Ford Ranger XLT adds the Sport Appearance Package, which will get you 17-inch alloy wheels, a sliding rear window, wireless phone charging, and 400 watts of in-cab and in-bed power, one of the new Ranger's most valuable features.

Lariat Trim

Ford calls the Lariat the top-tier Ranger for a reason. It's for those seeking luxury and premium features in their midsize truck. With an MSRP of $43,525, it's a significant jump over the base XL trim, but the Lariat combines rugged capability with refined style to justify that price. The Lariat adds 18-inch wheels, heated power-folding side mirrors, Bang & Olufsen HD radio with 10 speakers and a subwoofer, ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 12-inch touch screen.
